Seal it With a Signet

A seal is a way to make an impression in some moldable medium in order to ensure a document’s authenticity. Applied seals originally were used in a way that kept the document closed and the seal had to be broken to be opened. While applied seals are rarely used this way anymore, applied seals are still used on the faces of documents in today’s world.

Throughout history most seals were circular. Ovals, triangles, and shield shapes were also used at times. Usually the seal had some type of graphic element surrounded by text. Of course, this was not always the case and there have been millions of variations through the years. During the middle ages, men had circular seals while women had ovals as did church figures.

Signet rings are one of the earliest forms of functional jewelry (although perhaps not as intriguing as poison rings). Signet rings began in ancient Egypt. The rings were engraved with the wearers’ seal. The ring was then used to stamp the wearer’s special seal on to official documents.

Men wore these rings much more often than women (as most women were not the ones to do any official business and therefore had no need to have one). The rings were made to be heavy and strong. Because they were made to be used, they needed to stand up to wear and tear. Often the seal portion of these rings was made of an agate. Carnelian, Sardonyx, and onyx were popular. Ruby, amethyst, garnet, bloodstone, and lapis lazuli were also favored. Metal signet rings also made nice seals and so the seals were often cast in the face of gold or silver rings.

While rings are not often used for this purpose anymore, they are still popular. The Pope still wears a signet ring with his seal. When a Pope dies, his ring is destroyed with some fanfare as a clearing of the way for the new Pope. Today many people enjoy have family crests on their signet rings. Also very popular is to have initials, dates, or other writing carved into the signets. When Signet Rings were truly used to seal documents, the writing was reversed so that it would appear correctly in the seal. Since at least the 16th century, Signet Rings without the reverse writing have been made signally their decorative, rather than functional use.

GEMaffair has a large selection of Signet Rings for the modern man and woman. There are thirty separate designs to choose from. Styles come in yellow gold, white gold, and sterling silver. Many of the pieces are in a unisex design suitable for a man or woman. Some of the larger styles of rings are more suitable for men. There are also a few styles that are more appropriate for women like the heart shaped designs. Besides hearts, you will find traditional circles and ovals.

Most of the rings are finished smoothly, but a few styles have a hammered finish. Whichever style you select, you will certainly want it engraved. Custom engraving service start at just $11.97. Initials or a name is certainly a winner on Signet Rings. But there are plenty more choices. What about initials and the birthdate of a child? Initials and a 16 for that special Sweet Sixteen? Maybe your wedding date as an anniversary gift? The name of a school and the graduation date makes a perfect graduation gift, just as a baby’s name and birthdate can make the perfect gift for a brand-new parent.

Military service can be commemorated with a Signet Ring just as can service with the police or fire departments. An engraving is even the perfect way to recognize a championship season for the athlete or fan in your life. The possibilities are endless
