Do You Know What Today Is?

Marking the Date

We have all seen commercials where men are scrambling to make dinner reservations, buy flowers, or pick up candy at the last second when they realize that today is their anniversary. Movies and television shows depict a man arriving home to find candles and a romantic dinner set out and he panics trying to remember why that day is special. In reality most men are more prepared for special occasions than that. But how did the tradition of anniversary gifts come to be?

Origins of Anniversaries

It seems that history of gifts for wedding anniversaries had strong roots in The Holy Roman Empire. Back then husbands gave their wives silver wreaths to wear on their head on their twenty-fifth anniversary and a gold wreath after fifty years of marriage. These same gifts were present to wives by their friends and neighbors in medieval Germany. That certainly is a long time to wait for a gift.

Traditional Gifts

As time went on, more anniversaries were celebrated, and women didn’t have to wait quite as long to be treated to gifts to celebrate the date of their marriage. Traditionally Paper is now the first anniversary gift. Appropriate gifts could include anything from a simple card to a painting to a book. The second anniversary with Cotton as the traditional gift makes a perfect time to give clothing, bedding, or towels. Belts, shoes, and coats are great choices for Leather on the 3rd anniversary. Linen and Silk on the 4th anniversary give choices like sheets, table covers, and lingerie. Wood is the traditional gift for the fifth anniversary. Furniture is often a good choice for this anniversary.

Specific materials continue yearly through Crystal the traditional choice for the 15th anniversary where vases, glasses, and decanters are all nice options. After that gifts come in fives with China presenting gift opportunities for new table settings on the 20th anniversary. Still called the Silver Anniversary, the 25th is the perfect time for silver jewelry, picture frames, or other decorative pieces. Again following ancient traditions, the 50th anniversary is the Golden one. And the Diamond Jubilee Anniversary is marked at 60 years of marriage.

Special Greetings

In the United Kingdom couples can receive a special anniversary greeting from the Royal Family on their 60th, 65th, 70th, and subsequent anniversaries. Canada’s Governor General also sends out special congratulations starting at the 50th anniversary and every five years after. In Australia the Governor-General sends out greetings for every anniversary from fifty on up, as do several other members of the government. The President of the United States of America also sends out Happy Anniversary greetings for couple’s fiftieth anniversary and all after that. All Roman Catholics are eligible for a Papal blessing at their local Catholic Church for their 25th, 50th, 60th, and all other special anniversaries.

Modern Traditions

While some people like the idea of sharing the traditional gifts on their anniversaries, in today’s world, modern traditions have been born as well. Dinner at a nice restaurant or a romantic dinner for two is often chosen as a way to celebrate another year of marriage. Flowers and candy are always nice choices. Many couples today celebrate with the exchange of jewelry. Out of the tradition of jewelry exchanges came the idea of the three-diamond ring.

The idea of the three-diamond ring is that one diamond represents the past, the center diamond represents the present, and the third diamond represents the future. What a wonderful way to celebrate all phases of your marriage. At GemAffair you will find a selection of three-diamond anniversary rings in a variety of settings and a wide array of price points. There is a piece to help every couple celebrate their years of marriage together and all the ones to come.
