Diamonds are Forever

You may have heard the phrase, “Diamonds are Forever,” but do you know its origin? The phrase actually came from the lyrics of a song of the same name sung by Shirley Bassey. The song was on the soundtrack for the seventh James Bond movie, which was called Diamonds are Forever.

Shirley Bassey

Shirley Bassey was born in Whales on January 8, 1947. She has been considered to be one of most popular female singers in the 20th Century in Britain. Shirley’s mother was British and her dad was Nigerian. She was the youngest child in a family of many children. She had a rough start in life; she was born in a brothel and when she was one her father was jailed for having sex with a minor and after serving his sentence was deported. At 14 Shirley dropped out of school and found work in the packing industry during the day and singing in clubs on weekends and in the evenings. She moved on to get jobs in a few musicals but quit and began waitressing when she had her first child at 16 years old. She didn’t take off for too long. By 1955 she was back in show business and by 1957 she was hitting the top slots on the charts. In addition to hits in England, she also made hit records in America.

In 1965 she sang the title song for the sixth James Bond movie, Goldfinger and the song hit 8 on the U.S. billboard chart and the soundtrack hit number 1. Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, and Big Spender were some of her biggest hits.

In the 1980’s Bassey did occasional concerts, but mainly focused on charitable work. She did continue to preform through the years and is often asked to do performances for celebrities, charitable events, royalty, and awards ceremonies. On June 4, 2012 she preformed along side of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Annie Lennon, and Tom Jones at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s 60th Jubilee Party. She chose to sing Diamonds are Forever. Shirley Bassey is scheduled to perform at the 2013 Academy Awards on February 24th. The performance will celebrate the James Bond movie franchise’s 50th anniversary.
