April Birthstone: Diamond

Lucky April babies have the most valuable of all birthstones; the diamond. Diamonds originated as humble pieces of coal exposed to high heat causing their atoms to rearrange and turn the black coal into a sparkling diamond. This incredible process has been happening for billions of years. In fact, the oldest diamond known to mankind is over 4 billion years old.

Scientists have tried for centuries to duplicate the process of turning coal into diamonds but have remained unsuccessful. The closest they have come to creating a diamond is by replicating the color and clarity of the highest grade diamonds with cubic zirconia stones. Diamonds remain one of the few jewels of the world that can not be perfectly recreated in a lab.

The word diamond is appropriately named after an ancient word meaning "invincible." This April Birthstone continues to be the hardest substance on earth according to the mohs scale of hardness. However, the diamond also remains invincible with its ability to promise a smile and a kiss whenever one is given as a gift.

May Birthstone: Emerald

May's birthstone is the beautiful grassy-green emerald. Emerald is highly valued as the green variety of the mineral Beryl and is one of the three most precious gemstones in the world. Emeralds are loved for their intense green color instead of their refractive properties. The intensity of an emerald's rich hues and distinct markings tells the story of the gemstone’s life making each and every emerald gem completely unique.

Emeralds have many extraordinary healing properties according to folklore. Legend has it that wearing an emerald ring will ensure a safe and painless child birth while wearing an emerald pendant will cure dysentery and prevent epileptic attacks. Some even believe that just one look at the refreshing and lively green of an emerald will improve poor eyesight.

June Birthstone: Pearl

Pearls are unique in the gemstone world because unlike most they originate from the depths of the sea instead of the walls of the earth. Pearls begin their lives as an annoyance to various mollusks, intruding on their lives as a tiny pebble or grain of sand. Once this pebble has moved in, the mollusk spins a substance called nacre around the intrusive pest as a form of protection. After many months (or even many years) of coating the intruder in nacre, a pearl will be formed.

Once a pearl has been removed from the mollusk it can be strung onto a pearl necklace or set in sterling silver to make a classic pair of pearl earrings. Pearls are worn as a sophisticated piece of jewelry and loved by woman around the world. Some of the most famous wearers of pearls are Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth, Jaclyn Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.
