Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

Who Said It?

You have probably heard the saying, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” The phrase first came from the title of a song by Carol Channing in the 1949 Broadway musical called Gentleman Prefer Blondes. The song was popularized, however, a few years later when the Broadway show was made into a movie in 1953. The song was performed in the movie version by the lead, Marilyn Monroe. Since the song has been performed by other singers like Anna Nicole Smith and Madonna. But, really, who more fitting to sing such a glamorous song than Marilyn Monroe?

Norma Jean

Born in 1926 as Norma Jean Mortenson (changed to Baker shortly after), Marilyn Monroe started life out the hard way bouncing from foster home to foster home. She began with a foster mother, Ida. At one point her mother insisted on taking her back, but soon after her mother declined mentally and Norma Jean went to live with her mother’s best friend, Grace. Often lacking in confidence she struggled as a young girl. Grace told Norma Jean that one day she would be a movie star. Grace loved Jean Harlow and would let Norma Jean curl her hair and wear make up when they went out. When Grace got married, Norma Jean was sent to an orphanage and then several foster homes. Grace and her husband eventually took her back, but they shouldn’t have as he continually attempted to assault Norma Jean. Grace sent her to live with one of her aunts where again Norma Jean was abused. She went with another aunt where she was truly happy for a time. Eventually Aunt Anna became old and ill and Norma Jean moved back in with Grace. That is until Grace and her husband wanted to move to Virginia without Norma Jean. A neighbor offered to adopt her, but Grace refused. Despite being two years too young, she convince the neighbor boy she was dating to marry her to avoid living at yet another foster home.

Norma Becomes Marilyn

While her first husband was away with the merchant marines, Marilyn accidentally found work as a model and became very successful. After bleaching her hair blond a Fox executive found her and helped her pick a new name. The film roles followed and a star was born. From the moment she starred in her first movie, she became a style icon.

Marilyn’s Style

So what can the modern woman learn from Marilyn Monroe? Number 1: Embrace those curves! Marilyn Monroe was not a skinny woman, but you would never catch her trying to cover up in baggy sweats or oversized sweaters. Whatever your size, wear clothes that flatter your body, not ones that hide it. Number 2: Find your signature style. Do what you love. Marilyn loved halter dresses as well as pencil skirts and cashmere sweaters. She knew they looked good on her and she felt good in them. They became her look. Find what you like and embrace it. Number 3: Do sexy, not trampy. Marilyn knew that a little skin was sexy, but a lot of skin can be anything but. Think about a sweetheart neckline. They flatter many different body types and show enough to be intriguing without giving everything away. Number 4: Accessorize! And don’t be afraid of diamonds. Whether they are real or imitation, never be afraid of a sparkling diamond. It was in the movie, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, that Marilyn first saw a diamond tiara. After realizing it wasn’t a necklace, she popped it on her head and exclaimed, “I always love finding new places to wear diamonds.”
