Body Jewelry: Decorate from the toes up!

Most commonly when people mention jewelry, they are referring to rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. But, there is a lot more to jewelry than the face and head. From toe rings, to anklets, to belly button rings, to facial piercings, almost any part of the body can be adorned. While sometimes these less common pieces are thought to be new and modern, really body jewelry has a long, rich history.

The History of Toe Rings

Toe rings can be made out of almost anything from traditional sliver and gold to more modern string and seashells. While they can be worn on any toe, the second toe is the most popular. While it may seem that they are too hip to be old, the truth is they are very old.

Toe rings are mentioned in written history at least as early as the 4th century BC in a Sanskrit poem. The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art houses a toe ring made in 15th Century Persia. While in the Western Hemisphere, toe rings don’t have a lot of significance beyond being ultra cool; in India toe rings are very popular and often have meaning. Women wear toe rings there to signify that they are married and men wear them on their big toes as a symbol of masculinity. Sometimes they are also worn to cure illnesses or pains. In Hindi religions gold, a representation of wealth, is only to be worn from the waist up, therefore toe rings are made from silver. Modern Hindi brides have added diamond adornments to the traditional silver toe ring. Often the rings are worn in pairs on the second toes of both feet, however they are known to be worn on all toes except for the pinky and often in multiples.

Toe rings were not actually brought to America until 1973. Majorie Borell brought them from India to New York and began selling them in her store called Florucci on 59th Street in New York City. She sold the toe rings to Bloomingdales after a while.

The History of Anklets

Anklets are commonly made out of silver or gold. Some are also made out of leather, plastic, nylon, or other fibers. Some are a simple chain while others have charms, beads, or other adornments.

The first evidence of anklets comes from Mesopotamia from the ancient Sumerians. That is over 4,000 years ago. It seems that during that time period, anklets signified how wealthy her husband was. Ancient Egyptians also wore anklets. Although at this time it had nothing to do with wealth and both the rich and poor wore them.

At one point in the Middle East, anklets were part of a body modification technique. Anklets were worn on both ankles and connected with a piece of metal chain. This was done to create a shorter, prettier gait for women when they walked. Similarly to toe rings, in India, anklets sometimes signified marital status. Indian women also often adorn the anklets with bells and use them during ceremonial dances. Middle eastern women also often use these jingly anklets during belly dancing routines. Sometimes anklets are connected to toe rings with a fine chain. Anklets first became popular in the United States in the 1950’s and grew even more in popularity during the 1970’s.

The History of Belly Button Rings

Sometimes a belly button ring is called a navel piercing, an umbilical dip piercing. While some “stick-on” type belly button jewelry can found, by and large belly button rings are piercings. Very recently clip on belly jewelry has come out on the market, as well. Some people heal very quickly, but others can take up to six months. Proper care and cleaning are very important after a bully button is pierced. Women tend to get pierced much more frequently than men.

Body piercing, including belly button piercing, is another ancient tradition. Egyptian Pharaohs often pierced their belly buttons because to them the belly button was very significant. They believed the naval was a symbol of the transition from life to eternity. They held this as such a status symbol, however, that only Pharaohs were allowed to wear belly button rings. All others wearing one were subject to the death penalty. As time wore on, the death penalty may not have been a consequence, but Egyptian royalty continued to wear them as a symbol of wealth.

The belly button ring is the most common body piercing in today’s culture. The popularity spiked after model, Christy Turlington, showed hers off during a 1993 runway show. Aerosmith’s Crying music video also added to the navel piercing when Alicia Silverstone got one done in the video. The most popular type of ring is the barbell design.

The Right Jewelry For You

There are a few things to consider when picking out toe rings, anklets and other jewelry. First you want to make sure that the fit is right. The fit of toe rings should be snug, but not too tight. Anklets should be loose but not so loose as to slip off. Many toe rings, like most of the ones GemAffair sells, are adjustable and therefore do not have to be sized exactly. GemAffair offers sizing guide help for the ones that do need to be sized.

Another thing to consider is style. Are you going for a casual or formal look? Do you like sliver or gold better? GemAffair carries a wide variety of both. From toe rings with religious sayings, to ones that sport your favorite team logos, we have them all. You will find anklets and toe rings in a wide variety of styles to go with every outfit for every occasion! Many can even be engraved for that extra special touch.
