Choose the pedals

The more customized your trail is the more it will be appreciated and cherished. Find out if she has a favorite color of roses. Once you know her favorite color you are well on the road to making this plan a reality.

Determine how far your trail will lead

If you are going to lead her on a wild goose chase around the house, you are going to need to purchase many more rose pedals than if you are just planning to lead her into one room. To make a decent trail you will need to figure one bag of flowers per room (this will allow you to have some pedals to spread around the gift as well) You could likely use fewer pedals, but you will not get the same aromatic impact that you will if you make your trail a fairly dense one.

Go to the florist

Florists will often sell bags of rose pedals for less than the actual roses, and this will save you the time and energy of disassembling the rose buds. Be sure to get enough to cover your entire path. Sam's club also sells bags of pedals for an economical price. It would be wise to call around if the color she prefers is rare.

Be sure not to leave the pedals in a hot car all day. If you purchase them in the morning and don't need them until the evening or a day or two later, store the pedals in the refrigerator. This will increase the longevity of your pedals.

Plan ahead

You will need to lay out the pedals prior to her arrival, whether that arrival is to a hotel room, home, picnic, etc. Give yourself enough time to lay out the pedals and the gift. If the two of you will be arriving at the destination simultaneously, try blindfolding her and asking her to wait for a few minutes while you "set the mood". This will likely peak her curiosity as well as her excitement level.

Don't plan too far ahead however. If you lay out the pedals in the morning and do not return until the end of the day, you will likely not have the same powerful smell than you would if the pedals are only out for a short time.

Be careful where you place the pedals as well. If you have white carpeting and choose red roses, then walk all over them, you may now have pink carpet. Also remember that whatever "mess" is created will need to be cleaned up (and if you want to be a true romantic SHE will not be the one to do the cleaning up)

Place the gift

Be sure the gift is in a fairly obvious place. You don't want her to come to the end of the path and say "Is this it?" The location should be a place free from distractions (phone, kids, TV) so the two of you can enjoy the moment.
