Celtic Earrings

The Celts dominated western Europe for thousands of years. They were a nomadic people that found success in science and the arts of architecture and religion. Like the Romans and Egytpians of the day, the Celts were a proud people. As they were nomadic travellers with no form of record, jewelry was often used to tell stories and record histories. Certain pieces represented certain things. Often, earrings styles features intricate knot work representing different interactions. The triquetra represented the number three, a terribly important number ot the Celts be it first represented the female aspect being the grandmother, mother and daughter and later when introduced to Christianity, the Holy Trinity. The dara knot which represented the great oak and stood for power, strength, destiny and leadership. The quaternary which symbolized the repetition of groupings of four in nature (the four seasons; wind, air, fire and water; the fur directions). And finally the five fold which was an expansion of the quaternary symbol and represented a fifth and final element which generally referred to a deity (pagan or Christian as the time saw fit) Celtic earrings make an excellent addition to any look.
